Before the Vegas Golden Knights took the ice in their inaugural home game on Tuesday night, the team introduced first responders in an emotional 15-minute ceremony. Doctors, nurses, policemen and firefighters were called out by name, accompanied by Golden Knights players.

There also was a 58-second moment of silence to honor the 58 people killed in the worst mass shooting in American history, which occurred Oct. 1 at a country music concert in Las Vegas -- less than a mile from T-Mobile Arena, home of the Golden Knights. The names of the victims were emblazoned on the ice.

The Golden Knights beat the Coyotes 5-2 to become the first expansion team to start 3-0.

Nathan Walker became the first Australian native to play in the NHL and had a grand debut when the Washington Capitals forward scored his first career goal on Sunday.

"At first, I wasn't 100 percent sure," the 23-year-old said of his goal.

The first-year NHL team, the Vegas Golden Knights, has played two games, and won both, each time on a James Neal goal.

Neal's goal at 3:46 of overtime Saturday night gave the Golden Knights a 2-1 victory in Arizona Coyotes, one night after Neal scored both goals in a 2-1 victory in Dallas.

Alex Ovechkin has etched his name into the record book, becoming the first player since the NHL's inaugural season to open a season with consecutive hat tricks.

Ovechkin scored his fourth, fifth and sixth goals of the season in the first period of the Capitals' home opener against the Canadiens. He scored his first three goals of the season in the Capitals' season opener in Ottawa on Thursday night.
